GAME DAY PREVIEW: Los Angeles Lakers VS. Houston Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers are far from their glory days as a perennial NBA powerhouse even though the person who carried them there for the past decade is still on their team. Kobe Bryant is believed to be on the twilight of his career, averaging his lowest output on his field goal percentage of 37% far from his average career stats of 45%. He may still have his scoring prowess shown on his last game against Golden State, having 44 points but missed 19 of his 34 shots. Thirty four field goals attempted are rare in the NBA these days and only Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony are licensed to shoot that many in a game. It wouldn’t be a problem for the Lakers if they are winning, especially if your team is injury-riddled right from the very start of the season. Even everything is not going well for the Lakers, we should not forget that Kobe Bryant is still Kobe Bryant and he might carry his team on his shoulders this postseason.

Head to Head Matchup

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (9-1): The Rockets topped the league in defense in terms of average points allowed (88.9) and fifth in rebounds per game differential. They survived the low scoring game against the Oklahoma City Thunder last Sunday. The last time a team won with 69 or fewer points was Detroit’s 64-62 victory over Utah on March 13, 2005, according to STATS. High scoring James Harden will be on the front line of the Rockets with his (26.2ppg) and a career high of 7.5 dimes per game together with the former Laker Dwight Howard who provides (20.1ppg) and 11.9 boards per game and compliments the “lack of defense” that Harden is showing.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (1-9): Opposite to Houston, the Lakers have the league worst average points allowed (112.1) and a losing margin of (-10.5) in their first ten games. The Lakers lost their last 3 games after finally getting a win in Charlotte that seemed like a long time ago because of their slump. To make things much worse, the Lakers were atrocious on offense especially to those who should back up Kobe who went 10-for-35 with only 27 points combined good for 28.6% from the field.

The Stat Sheet
