Estudiantes vs Argentinos Jrs
Estudiantes took a major step back in their campaign last Sunday, losing 1-0 away to Tigre in a direct clash for both playoff qualification and a Copa Sudamericana berth. It was El Pincha’s second straight league defeat, leaving them on 21 points in the Torneo Clausura. They must win to avoid depending on other results in their bid to reach the round of 16. This is their only remaining goal, as last weekend’s loss mathematically eliminated them from international competition via the aggregate table. Estudiantes have recorded five wins, one draw, and two losses at home in this tournament.
After their disappointment in the Copa Argentina final, Argentinos Juniors continue to prove they are one of the best teams in the country. Last Monday, they played very well and defeated Belgrano 1-0 at home, with a first-half goal from Lautaro Giaccone. In doing so, El Bicho remain in pursuit of their two main goals: they climbed to third place in the aggregate table — which would qualify them for the Copa Libertadores if they hold that position — and also entered the playoff zone in Group A with 21 points, just a step away from advancing in the Clausura. Argentinos have won two and lost one of their last three league matches, but have suffered six defeats in eight away games in this competition (along with one win and one draw).
Whoever loses this game will very likely miss the playoffs, but for Estudiantes the draw is definitely not enough because of their goals difference so I expect them to take risks and we should have an open game.
