Gimnasia – San Lorenzo
Gimnasia LP had a forgettable performance in the opening match of the 2025 season. Outplayed in all areas of the field, Marcelo Méndez’s team suffered a well-deserved 3-0 defeat against Instituto on the road. This marked their fourth consecutive league loss, failing to score a single goal during that stretch. Furthermore, El Lobo lost their last home match (1-0 against Talleres), ending a three-game unbeaten run at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo (two wins and one draw). After a challenging 2024, San Lorenzo started the new season on a high note. With a great effort, they secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Talleres (the runners-up of the last Liga Profesional) at home, thanks to Andres Vombergar’s goal in the 81st minute. Along with earning their first three points of 2025, El Ciclon ended a five-game winless streak in the league (one draw and four losses). On a positive note, San Lorenzo claimed seven of the last 12 points available on the road, with two wins, one draw, and one loss. Iker Muniain remains sidelined due to injury, while coach Miguel Russo welcomes Nery Dominguez, who joins from Lanus. Gimnasia was just terrible in the first game of the season and it’s hard to imagine how they will improve with this poor squad. San Lorenzo was not brilliant but they looked solid despite not having Iker Muniain in midfield and should be able to at least avoid a defeat here.
