Velez vs Godoy Cruz
Vélez Sarsfield looks nothing like the team that won the league title just two months ago. Their tough 3-0 away loss to Independiente leaves them with just one point in five Torneo Apertura matches, with one draw and four defeats, and without scoring a single goal so far in 2025. As a result, doubts are already emerging about the future of newly appointed coach Sebastian Dominguez. On a positive note, Vélez lost just one of their last 21 league matches at home, winning 14 and drawing six. Emanuel Mammana is available for Monday after recovering from a knee injury.
Godoy Cruz had their best performance of the year last Wednesday, but it still wasn’t enough to secure a win. Their 0-0 draw with River Plate at home, in their return to Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, means El Tomba remain winless in the Torneo Apertura, collecting just two points from two draws and two losses (with one game in hand) and failing to score a single goal so far. As a result, head coach Ernesto Pedernera stepped down. To make matters worse, Godoy Cruz lost four of their last seven away matches, with just one win and two draws. Esteban Solari will make his debut as the team’s new head coach on Monday.
The defending champions Velez have been nothing but disappointing so far this season but they have a great opportunity here to finally get their first win of 2025. They will face this Godoy Cruz that have been as bad as them but the difference is that the hosts have the potential to play better and a game at home against a weak rival should be their best chance to get the 3 points.
