Fluminense made their experience count to reach the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals, beating debutants Independiente Rivadavia on penalties after a 1–1 draw away from home. On Saturday, they defeated CR Vasco da Gama 1–0 at home to remain fourth in the Brasileirao with 45 points from 26 matches. The result also extended the tenure of interim head coach Marcão de Oliveira. O Tricolor are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions (three wins and four draws), four of them at home (three wins and one draw). Hércules and Thiago Silva have both recovered from their respective knocks and are available to face Platense on Tuesday. Platense continue to make history at every step. In their first Copa Libertadores campaign, El Calamar reached the quarter-finals after a goalless draw and a penalty-shootout victory away to Coquimbo Unido. On Friday, they were held to a 1–1 home draw by Deportivo Riestra. Platense now have nine points from eight Torneo Clausura matches, leaving them outside the playoff places in Group A. They are winless in their last three matches in regular time across all competitions (two draws and one defeat). Platense will play a historic game at Maracana, maybe their most important game ever, but I can’t imagine them going much further than this: they are going through a mediocre season with only 2 wins out of 8 league games and a giant like Fluminense should be too much for them.
