Estudiantes vs Boca
Estudiantes began the defence of the title they won in December with an entertaining 1-1 draw away to Independiente, in a lively match in which they were unable to fully capitalise on playing against ten men for almost the entire second half. El Pincha collected their first point of the Torneo Apertura and extended their unbeaten league run to five matches (three wins and two draws in regular time). At home, Eduardo Domínguez’s team have lost their last two league games, both by a 2-1 scoreline, against Boca Juniors and Argentinos Juniors. Fernando Muslera picked up Achilles tendon inflammation and will miss Wednesday’s match, while Tiago Palacios remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury. Santiago Ascacíbar has been sold to Boca Juniors and Edwin Cetré is about to join Athlético Paranaense in Brazil. Boca Juniors opened the 2026 season with a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Deportivo Riestra, needing to grind it out before Lautaro Di Lollo’s header in the 77th minute finally made the difference. El Xeneize collected their first three points of the Torneo Apertura and recorded their seventh victory in the last eight league matches, with only one defeat in that stretch. Away from home, Boca have won their last two games (2-1 against Estudiantes and 3-1 versus Barracas Central). Head coach Claudio Úbeda will continue to be without Miguel Merentiel, Milton Giménez and Carlos Palacios, who remain sidelined with injuries. Boca acquired one of Estudiantes’ best player yesterday, defensive midfielder Santiago Ascacibar who won’t feature in this game but is a huge loss for the defending champions who also won’t have colombian striker Edwin Cetre so I expect the visitors to take advantage of a team that will miss key pieces.
