Velez – Estudiantes
Vélez Sarsfield got less than they deserved from their visit to Deportivo Riestra last Saturday: they drew 1-1 after missing several chances and having a controversial late goal ruled out that could have given them the win. However, El Fortín remain unbeaten in the Torneo Clausura, with 13 points from three wins and four draws, leaving them fourth in group A. They are also third in the overall standings, into the Copa Libertadores qualification places. At home, Vélez have collected seven points from nine available in this competition. Before their next league match, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw against Boca Juniors on Wednesday, September 2, in the Copa Argentina Round of 16. Estudiantes showed a good level and were superior to Newell’s Old Boys for long periods, but their lack of efficiency meant they had to settle for a goalless draw at home. They remain inconsistent in the Torneo Clausura, having won just one of their last five matches (one draw and three defeats). With seven points, they are still outside the Group A playoff qualification places. In the overall standings, El Pincha are sixth, currently occupying a Copa Sudamericana qualification spot and just three points behind the final Copa Libertadores place. Away, Estudiantes have lost all three of their matches in this competition without scoring a single goal. Estudiantes will be more focused in next Wenesday Copa Libertadores Quarterfinals game against Corinthians and will rest some starters, they’ve been disappointing so far and should have trouble against this solid Velez.
